Vaal sports journo wins SAFJA award

“This is an honour that is both humbling and motivating. I am indeed grateful and very happy!” Poho said.

VANDERBIJLPARK – Rising star in football journalism, Neo Poho (28), has bagged the prestigious South African Football Journalist Association (SAFJA) Young Journalist of the Year Award.

The award has cemented Poho’s place as one of the brightest voices in the country’s sports media.

The SoccerBeat journalist, sports writer, presenter, and content producer, was beaming with pride after his name was called out among the winners at the glittering SAFJA awards night.

“I would firstly like to thank SAFJA for this recognition and equally thank the colleagues who voted for me to win this award.”

“This is an honour that is both humbling and motivating. I am indeed grateful and very happy!” Poho said.

Poho’s journey in the media world began in 2019 at 103 Hope FM, where veteran broadcaster Mpumi Manyisi mentored him, instilling discipline and nurturing his raw talent.

“Mpumi believed in me even when I doubted myself,” Poho reflected.

His growth was further shaped by the guidance of Motseki Mabuya, whose mentorship strengthened Poho’s professionalism and resilience.

Surrounded by a strong support system that included Vusi Siyani, Relebohile Lairi, Benjamin Simon, and Bongani Mthimkhulu, Poho quickly became a force in football storytelling.

After Hope FM’s closure, Poho’s career took a digital twist at KHD Radio, where Lehlohonolo Menyatso introduced him to the fast-paced world of digital media.

That leap broadened his skills and set him on the path to becoming the multiplatform journalist he is today.

Currently, at SoccerBeat, Poho has carved out a reputation for producing hard-hitting and impactful football content that resonates deeply with fans across South Africa.

His SAFJA win comes as recognition not only of his work ethic but also of his passion for telling football stories with authenticity and flair.

At just 28 years old, Neo Poho’s journey is only beginning. With a SAFJA award already in the bag, the young journalist has set his sights on raising the bar even higher in South African sports journalism.
