Author hopes to inspire dreams through his autobiography

VEREENIGING – The Rus-ter-Vaal Community Library was filled with inspiration and hope on September 6, as Ronnie Van der Merwe launched his powerful autobiography, From the Inside Out.
Van der Merwe, a professional nurse at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, is no stranger to the Rus-ter-Vaal library. As a child, he was a familiar face in its aisles, often lost in books. It was within those walls that his passion for language and storytelling was sparked, eventually leading him to study linguistics and journalism.
The book launch was a deeply personal and emotional event, attended by Van der Merwe’s family, friends, community members, and mentors—many of whom played key roles in shaping the person he is today.
Librarian Jaconitha Khatide expressed her gratitude to Van der Merwe for not only keeping the library’s doors open through his second publication but also for bravely sharing his life story.
“Ronnie has worked tirelessly to overcome adversity and chase his dreams. His courage to speak so openly about his journey is truly inspiring,” she said.
One of the speakers, Eric Lewaak, shared his pride in seeing Van der Merwe return to his roots. “It’s heartwarming to witness a former student come back home and thrive. As someone who has spent decades in education, this is the reward,” he said.
In an interview with Ster North, Van der Merwe reflected on the overwhelming support he received. “I’m beyond grateful for how the launch turned out. I’ve reached a point in my life where I’m ready to be an open book literally if it means inspiring just one person.”
Quoting one of his core messages, he added, “The grave is the richest place on earth because so many people die with unfulfilled dreams. My hope is to motivate someone to start living boldly, without fear of judgment.”
Van der Merwe speaks candidly in his autobiography about being proudly gay and HIV-positive. He shares the intimate chapters of his life, diving deep into topics such as identity, HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, adoption, and self-acceptance. The book promises to be a raw and unflinching journey through some of his most vulnerable moments.
“Everyone knows my story, and I’m not ashamed of it,” he said. “If I can use my truth to help someone else find the courage to live fully, then it’s all worth it. I hope readers are moved to finally start creating the life they’ve always wanted before it’s too late.”
