Police destroy illegal liquor in Sebokeng operation

The South African Police Service destroyed over 3,280 litres of illegal liquor seized from unlicensed outlets across the Sedibeng District during a major Operation Shanela 2 enforcement action at the Sebokeng Wastewater Treatment Plant.

A large-scale liquor destruction operation was carried out at the Sebokeng Wastewater Treatment Plant on May 7. The operation formed part of the second phase of Operation Shanela 2.

Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Mashole Manamela oversaw the destruction of over 3,280 litres of alcohol. This liquor came from eight police stations, including Sebokeng, Meyerton, Sharpeville, Vereeniging,Orange Farm, De Deur, Evaton and vanderbijlpark.

The liquor was seized during Operation Shanela and liquor compliance inspections, where liquor outlets were found operating without the necessary documentation and licences to sell liquor. Brigadier Manamela told the media that seized alcohol is always destroyed and never consumed.

Police stated that alcohol contributes to many crimes. They believe closing illegal bars is a vital part of keeping the community safe. Police say liquor abuse remains one of the contributing factors to crimes such as gender-based violence and domestic violence.
