Evaton community urged to be safe as house robberies surge
Criminals frequently exploit unlocked gates.
EVATON. — Evaton Police have urged residents to stay vigilant and work closely with local authorities following a recent surge in house robberies across the area.
Police spokesperson, Constable Thulisile Msibi, explained that criminals frequently exploit unlocked gates and doors, inadequate outdoor lighting, and moments of distraction to target residential properties.
“Community awareness and co-operation remain key in the fight against crime. SAPS consistently advises residents to strengthen home security, remain alert to suspicious activity, and report crime promptly,” Msibi highlighted.
Report suspicious persons or vehicles immediately.
House robbery prevention tips:
• Keep all gates, doors, and windows locked, especially at night.
• Do not open your gate or door to strangers without verifying their identity.
• Install security gates, burglar bars, and, where possible, an alarm system.
• Ensure your yard and entrance are well lit at night.
• Report suspicious persons or vehicles immediately.
• Ask trusted neighbours to monitor your property when you are away.
• Avoid sharing your travel plans or absence on social media.
• Keep emergency numbers readily available for your family.
Observe the suspects and remember their clothing.
If you are confronted by robbers:
• Stay calm and avoid provoking the suspects.
• Do not resist or fight back if your life is in danger.
• Observe the suspects and remember their clothing, appearance, and vehicle details if it is safe to do so.
• Contact the SAPS immediately after the incident and avoid disturbing the crime scene until police arrive.
Local police continue to encourage community members to engage actively with local policing initiatives. Anyone with information regarding criminal activity can contact the SAPS Crime Stop line on 08600 10111, dial the emergency number 10111, or use the MySAPS App.
