Sharpeville fans celebrate Pirates’ historic triumph
Remarkably, this was Moremi’s first season at Orlando Pirates.

SEDIBENG.- Sharpeville ground to a complete standstill on Saturday afternoon as residents took to the streets to celebrate Orlando Pirates being crowned the Betway Premiership League champions for the first time in seven years.
The Mighty Buccaneers secured the 2025/2026 league title with a 2-0 victory over Orbit College in their final game of the season. The historic win triggered massive celebrations in the township, with hooting cars causing traffic jams that lasted late into the evening.
The party was deeply personal
While fans celebrated the club’s success, the party was also a deeply personal one for the families and friends of local youngsters Relebohile Mofokeng and Tshepang Moremi.
The two Sharpeville stars were praised for their outstanding performances throughout the season, which ended in them winning their very first top-flight league title medals. Remarkably, this was Moremi’s first season at Orlando Pirates, allowing him to achieve a milestone that many PSL players have chased for years. His childhood friend, Mofokeng, experienced a similar triumph.
Though Mofokeng was promoted to the senior team three seasons ago and has won several other trophies, the elusive league title had previously slipped through his fingers. He was seen in tears after the final whistle.
History has been written by the young stars
The talented duo has now written their names into local history as the most exciting young players to emerge from the Vaal Triangle. Their season might get even better on Wednesday, as both players are in contention to make the final Bafana Bafana squad for the Fifa World Cup 2026. National team coach Hugo Broos is set to announce his team, and both youngsters already have strong track records, having played for South Africa in the African Cup of Nations.
Mofokeng regarded as one of the best
Mofokeng, widely regarded as one of the best things to happen to South African football since his promotion, is highly expected to be nominated for the prestigious PSL awards. He is credited as a major driving force behind the club’s incredible treble-winning achievement this season.
In other football news, Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned the CAF Champions League winners on Sunday. The victory means they will add a second star to their jersey, making them the first South African club to win the prestigious tournament twice.
