‘Bro’ it’s cool to recycle your trash

"Don't trash our future, recycle," is the brothers famous slogan.

Brothers Dru and Ty de Bruyn of Southbroom are shining stalwarts for the Lower South Coast SPCA.

They have recently raised another R1000 for the animal welfare organisation.

Dru (18) and Ty (16) call themselves the ‘Trash-a-haulics’, and since they were young boys, they have worked hard to collect ‘trash’ and recycle it in return for money.

The teens keep two-thirds for pocket money and donate a third to the SPCA, an organisation that is close to their hearts as they love animals.

This makes the total amount donated to the SPCA so far about R10 000.

Dru has now finished school and is working with his mother, Kym, in the real estate industry. Ty is a learner at Port Shepstone High.

Looking back: Dru and Ty de Bruyn when they first began their ‘Trash-a-haulics’ project.

Dru said that over the years he has learnt a lot from this project.

“Something I’ve learnt is that lots of people throw away their stuff when it can be recycled and not discarded to ruin the appearance of a town or the environment,” he said.

Dru also added that when you do things for others or the community, it receives a lot more respect and interest than doing it for yourself.

They thank the businesses who have gone out of their way to keep cans for recycling.
