Umdoni addresses service delivery disruption

The mayor pleads with residents to exercise patience while action is being taken to revert services to normality.

For the past few days, several municipal workers resorted to downing tools in an effort to voice their grievances thus causing unwarranted disruption to service delivery in the Umdoni area.

Due to this, there has been no refuse collection in the area which has angered community members as bins overflow and garbage continues to pile up throughout the towns.

Umdoni Municipality released a statement today (May 22) addressing the service delivery disruption and  condemns the action carried out by a group of municipal employees.

“While the municipality is aware of the prolonged existence of this unauthorised action, the municipality assures residents and the business community that it is working towards resolving this issue to ensure reinstatement of services as soon as possible,” said Sphelele Cele, Umdoni communications manager.

“Management together with the political leadership have sought intervention from the Department of Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta). Currently, engagements are underway between the municipality and the union representatives of SAMWU and IMATU facilitated by Cogta to find an amicable solution.”

The Mayor, Mblai Cele-Luthuli, pleads with residents to exercise patience while action is being taken to revert services to normality.

“We further apologise that residents and the business community have to bear the brunt of employees downing tools,” she said.

The municipality will keep the community informed about the situation, and encourages everyone to follow Umdoni Municipality News on Facebook for official updates regarding municipal news and services.
