Rabies alert issued after Durban boy’s (3) death

The Amanzimtoti SPCA have, this week, found the fourth case of positive rabies this year, in Adams Mission.

AN outbreak of the rabies virus in the Durban area has already claimed the life of a three-year-old boy in Hillcrest, after he was bitten by a rabid cat.

Following this incident, Amanzimtoti SPCA warns the public to proceed with extreme caution around any untested animals, whether wild or domesticated.

Durban is currently suffering an outbreak of rabies. The Amanzimtoti SPCA have, this week, found the fourth case of positive rabies this year, in Adams Mission.

Vets and shelters remind that all dogs and cats must be vaccinated for rabies as it is required by law. The state vet’s office and SPCA provide free rabies vaccinations. Call Amanzimtoti SPCA on 031-904-2424 to find out when the free injections are available.

The SPCA cautions the public to refrain from picking up strays, as they are the biggest carriers of rabies. Rather call the local SPCA and report the lost animal’s whereabouts.

If you are bitten by any animal, wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical advice immediately about rabies and tetanus treatment. Time is essential, rather treat animal bites as positive until proven negative.
