Members of the public are invited to submit their comments on the draft annual Spatial Development Framework (SDF) for 2018/19.
This is a bid to address planning challenges and promote sustainable development in the city. The framework aims to address long-term spatial development direction that will allow increased economic activities in the city.
eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede said the SDF is a vital instrument to guide development which will benefit all eThekwini residents. “The framework is critical to transform our city by providing solutions to common planning development challenges,” she said.
“The spatial framework has the potential, as a co-ordinating instrument, to integrate environmental, economic and social considerations to ensure we address spatial inequalities and inefficiencies in society.”

The preparation of the annual SDF for 2017/18, which is in line with Section 26 of the Municipal Systems Act of 2000 and Chapter 4 part E of the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management (Act 16 of 2013), is a spatial representation of the vision of the Integrated Development Framework, which is the most important planning document for the municipality.
The SDF 2017/2018 is available at all municipal libraries and Sizakala centres for viewing and comment. eThekwini residents are encouraged to comment on the document to ensure Durban remains a city which attracts foreign direct investment and trade and remains globally competitive.

The deadline for all comments is 23 April. The public is urged to provide written comments marked for the attention of the senior manager, Helene Epstein of the strategic spatial planning branch, development planning department, room 226, second floor, city engineers building, 166 KE Masinga Road, Durban.
