RETURNING to the stage after a years-long hiatus is Basement of Wolves, an Amanzimtoti-based alternative hard rock band that originally landed onto the scene in 2019.

On September 5, the band will be joined by a star-studded line-up featuring Angst Party, You First, Sweetwater Rock Band and Grim Riddle, all bringing their own vibe.

The show is free and Basement of Wolves front-man, Chad Porter hopes it will further develop the burgeoning music scene in Amanzimtoti. The show begins at 15:00.

The band was originally formed in 2019 by Porter and Shaun Pretorius. Recent additions include Thomas Singleton and Duane de Coning.

“We started in 2019, although a lot of our songs date back to 2006 but were never released. Just when we started gaining momentum, the Covid-19 pandemic hit and everything we built came to a standstill. It has taken us a while to get the right members together, that have the same musical influences, dad rock,” joked Porter.

Its sound draws inspiration from bands like Chevelle, Deftones and the Pixies.

“Music has been my life. I started in my first band at the age of 14. Thomas, Shaun and I first crossed paths when we started a band called Silt in 1998. I also played bass for Lush Puppy, another well known band in Toti at the time. Music has been a major part of my life since then and I’ve played for a few original bands and enjoyed the privilege of playing at many festivals over the years,” said Porter.

“My musical journey started in Silt alongside Chad and Thomas. I got my first experience of live music from my dad, who also played in bands and was the drummer for Silt. Over the years Chad and I have done some projects together, but Basement of Wolves has been a big part of who we are,” said Pretorius.

“I always loved rock music and that inspired my joining Silt, which was the beginning of lifelong friendships and a love for playing. In my younger years I had the opportunity to do some travelling, but everything has just worked out now and being a part of Basement of Wolves is really amazing because Chad, Shaun and I have come full circle,” said Singleton.

“Chad and I were introduced by a mutual friend just over a year ago for another project but we quickly realised that we had a lot of the same musical interests which brought us together for two original projects. Chad and I are both a part of Grimm Riddle and I am the most recent addition to Basement of Wolves as the drummer. I’ve also had a long history on the music scene including having had the opportunity to play with a band while I lived in Turkey,” said De Coning.
