Climb aboard the health care train

A team of medical professionals on board the Phelophepa health care train will make a pit-stop at Winklespruit train station from 2 to 6 September.

For almost two decades, the Phelophepa health care train has been providing affordable, mobile health care services to rural communities across South Africa. Phelophepa operates for 35 weeks each year and provides treatment to some 58,000 individuals during this period.

Services provided are dental, eye, health, counselling and edu clinics. No examination fees are charged and some 110,000 medicine items are prescribed through the initiative.

Some 1,200 final year students have the opportunity to complete voluntary work on the train.

Due to unemployment, poverty, violence and HIV/Aids, the Phelophepa project supports South Africa’s existing health services and facilities in rural communities.

The “miracle train” as most people know it, will be operational until the end of September. Similar health services will be provided in Empangeni, Port Shepstone and Mooi River.
