Save lives this women’s month

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) thanks the public for choosing to donate blood this winter, as a result blood stock levels have improved significantly.

While levels are stable, the need for blood is, unfortunately always prevalent.

“This Women’s month, we request the public to continue donating blood in honour of mothers and children, especially those who are dependent on blood transfusions for their survival.

Research shows around 36% of blood the SANBS collects is used for women who lose blood during childbirth and gynaecological cases as well as for paediatric cases like surgery on foetuses, infants, children, adolescents and young adults,” said head of marketing KZN SANBS, Charles Maharaj.

One unit of blood can save up to three lives. If a single person donates blood four times a year, it can save up to 12 lives.

“We plead to all South Africans who meet the minimum requirements to commit to donating blood regularly.”

The minimum requirements to be a donor are to be between the ages of 16 and 65 years; weigh more than 50kg; be in good health and live a sexually safe lifestyle.

To find your nearest donor centre call 0800-11-9031 or visit www.sanbs.org.za or find them on Facebook or Twitter.
