Have your pets vaccinated against rabies

Athlone Park, Amanzimtoti SPCA, rabies campaign, vaccinations

The campaign is from Monday to Saturday, 23 to 28 September, except Tuesday, 24 September as it is a public holiday and the SPCA will be closed. Vaccinations are from 9am to noon.

Owners should ensure dogs are on leads and cats are in baskets or in a pillow case.

Rabies is a fatal disease that can affect all mammals, including humans. It is spread through infected saliva that gains entry into the body through a bite wound or a sore. It cannot penetrate unbroken skin. If bitten, wash the wound immediately and go to a hospital for treatment.

Signs to look out for if a dog is infected with rabies:

· Changes in behaviour such as nervousness and anxiety;

· Photophobia (fear of light);

· Excessive biting and snapping –very aggressive behaviour;

· Paralysis;

· Inability to swallow;

· Excessive saliva;

· Changes in the tone of a dog’s bark;

· Wild animals become unusually friendly.

There is no cure for rabies, therefore it is vital to vaccinate all pets annually.

For more details about the campaign, contact the SPCA on 031-904-2424.
