Seedling tunnels take root as Amcup marks 10 years.

AMANZIMTOTI Community Upliftment Project's (Amcup) Nico van Rensburg has developed a new addition to the organisation's successful vegetable tunnel project, a seedling tunnel.

A larger tunnel, it measures 20m x 15m and holds up to 193,000 seedlings. “We have placed 12 tunnels in Ilembe, Newcastle, Sisonke and Thungula. These communities will now have a constant supply of seedlings and it solves the challenge of veggie tunnel owners waiting for seedlings,” he said.

Seedlings being grown are cabbage, spinach, tomatoes, pepper and cucumbers. “I am excited about this new development as it makes the project self-sustainable.”

Amcup also celebrates its 10th birthday and invites the public to an open day on Sunday, 13 October from 11am to 3pm. “As it is our birthday, every visitor will get a free boerewors roll, coffee or tea.”The Amcup choir will provide entertainment.

The organisation currently has 42 residents involved in various projects. As part of its anniversary celebrations, the choir will perform at churches in the community and former residents will give testimonies of how Amcup assisted them to re-integrate into the community. “We have remained true to our vision to help the community help themselves.”
