No good fortune for conned victims

UMKOMAAS police are investigating several cases of people being conned out of cash by fortune tellers.

“We warn the community of adverts placed in newspapers by fortune tellers or 'doctors' who claim to assist with winning at casinos and medical miracles,” said Lt NG Msomi, communications officer at Umkomaas SAPS.

“The modus operandi used by the 'doctor' is to ask the victim to put all his money in an envelope and place it on the floor. The 'doctor' asks him to keep his eyes closed until he has finished praying. While the vicitim's eyes are closed, the 'doctor' removes the money from the envelope, replaces it with blank papers and seals it. After the consult is over, the victim is asked to open his eyes, take the envelope home and open it, only to discover the money was stolen.”

Lt Msomi warns the community to be alert as several similar cases have been opened at the station.
