Dad’s lifesaving gift to Noma
HAVING undergone a kidney transplant in 2013, Nomacenge Mngoma (25) of Doonheights is upbeat and positive and looking forward to a healthy 2014.
Noma’s donor was her dad and she underwent the transplant at Ethekwini Heart Hospital in May 2013. Prior to the operation she was attending several dialysis sessions a week, after being diagnosed with kidney failure caused by anaemia in 2012.
Noma’s mother, Girlie is also a kidney patient and the family was dealt a double blow when they found she had the same disease. “Initially plans were in place for my dad to donate his kidney to my mom, but there were several postponements. Then I fell ill,” said Noma.
Her parents made a joint decision that she should receive the kidney. “After the operation I spent a few weeks in hospital and a few months in medical isolation at home. I am feeling great now. I am happy and healthy and ready to go out and work.”
Noma is a qualified journalist and has sent out applications to get into the industry. In the meantime she has a slot on Radio Iziwilomzansi, a community radio station, which broadcasts in Durban and surrounds.
“I talk about kidney disease to inform and educate the public.” As she enjoys being behind the microphone, ideally she would like to move into broadcast industry.
