Get grubby in aid of World Wetlands Day
IN recognition of World Wetlands Day celebrated annually on 2 February, the Parks, Leisure and Cemeteries Department staff are embarking on a variety of activities in the week, in an effort to emphasise the importance of conservation and rehabilitation of wetlands.
This is also in line with 2014 being declared as the United Nations International Year of Family Farming.
On Friday, 7 February the team will be at Ilanda Wilds in Amanzimtoti from 8.30am to 10.30am.
The community is encouraged to participate in this clean-up campaign. Participants must take along a pair of waders, gumboots or old takkies, net for removing water lettuce, hat, water bottle, old clothes or an overall. They must also be prepared to get wet, muddy and grubby – all in the name of water conservation.
In view of the World Wetlands Day theme, ‘wetlands and agriculture’, the activities started off with staff members cleaning up the lake at the Botanic Gardens on Monday, 3 February. The campaign was a great success with staff working tirelessly to remove invasive water plants from the lake. The campaign continues at Umbilo Park Pond on Tuesday, 4 February, with activities proceeding to Caversham Paradise Valley on Wednesday, 5 February. The programme concludes at the Umlaas River on Friday, 7 February.
