Volunteers help steer tourism efforts

Sapphire Coast Toti Tourism (SCTT) is hard at work in the new year to capitalise on the success of the December holidays.

“We have started recruiting task teams members from the community who have volunteered their time for something they are passionate about,” said SCTT chairman, Jacques van Schalkwyk. “It assists us to get more done, but most importantly, it involves members of the community who want to make a difference.”

These task members include Kevin Merrideth, who is dealing with the SCTT website and online listings; Victoria Moya, who is dealing with welcome signage to the area, Wesley Pulvenis, who is dealing with the verge competition, Toti Conservancy chairman, Laura Taylor, who is dealing with the green corridor project to the falls and Liaan Smit, who is dealing with the bridge painting and maintenance.

“These members are going to keep the wheels turning in their portfolios and we thank them for their time and efforts. Should any member of the public wish to get involved as a task member or assist any of our task members. Please email me on chairman@totitourism.co.za.”

SCTT is also compiling an events calendar for the area. “We desperately need all organisers of sports teams, schools and clubs to email us,” said Jacques. “If there are any event organisers out there who have an event that attracts more than 50 people coming up, contact us as well. Even if it’s a fun walk or run, or a fundraising event, we would like to know about it. We want to create a central information point where residents and visitors can visit to find out what and when is happening.”

This year SCTT celebrates 25 years of tourism in Toti. “We want all previous chairmen to email me. We plan to erect a plaque in the SCTT office, acknowledging them all.”
