Acts of kindness follow social media nominations

A Toti resident has taken the initiative to change a social media drinking game to one to promote kindness in the area.

Sapphire Coast Toti Tourism chairman, Jacques van Schalkwyk was ‘Neknominated’ on Thursday, 6 February. This social networking game involves a person receiving a ‘nekmomination’ via social media website Facebook to ‘down’ an alcoholic beverage while being filmed.

The video is then loaded onto YouTube and the link is posted onto Facebook. The ‘neknominee’ nominates two other friends to take up the online challenge.

Jacques decided to rather forfeit the ‘down-down’ and instead replace it with a random act of kindness and re-name the challenge ‘Raknomination’.

On Friday he paid for two random people’s fuel at a Toti petrol station, which was filmed and uploaded onto YouTube.

“I then challenged Galleria shopping centre and the South Coast Sun to perform one random act of kindness,” said Jacques.

The South Coast Sun opted to support Toti SPCA for its random act of kindness and paid for the sponsorship of an adoption kennel for three months. “We chose Toti SPCA because of the sterling work it does on behalf of stray, neglected and abused animals locally. It’s a worthy cause and we feel more people should support it,” said South Coast Sun editor, Michelle Le Roux.

“This much-needed sponsorship will go towards the upkeep of our kennels,” said Toti SPCA manager, Tracey Girling. “It’s a big help and tahnks to the South Coast Sun for its sponsorship.” The video can be viewed on the South Coast Sun’s looklocal Facebook page.

In turn, the South Coast Sun nominated ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge and ward 97 committee member, Frank Horn to fulfil one random act of kindness by Wednesday, 19 February.

Galleria accepted Jacques’ challenge and had until Friday, 14 February to upload its video.
