The sentences will run consecutively, which means Juma will serve a 40-year jail term.
Juma received the stiff sentence for the murder of octogenarian,Ramsacal Bagrathic whose body was discovered in the early morning hours of 30 October 2010 at his home in School Circle, Park Rynie.
He had been suffocated with a pillow and the house was in a state of disarray. It was evident that he had been robbed before being murdered. Scottburgh SAPS registered charges of house robbery and murder for investigation.
Juma was arrested and detained by members of the Scottburgh cluster detective task team in Mahatma Gandhi Road in Durban. He made repeated court appearances and was remanded back into police custody until his final appearance for sentencing on 5 February.
Detective W/O Yugen Moodley of the detective task team expressed his gratitude to Pratisha Jugnundan, the prosecutor who presented the case for the State, for her advice and guidance throughout the investigation of the case.
“I’m relieved the case has been finalised and pleased with the conviction and sentence,” said Moodley.
Provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended members of Scottburgh cluster detective task team for their excellent investigation. “The wheels of justice grind slowly but exceedingly fine. I welcome the sentence meted out by the court. Justice has been served and yet another criminal has been taken off our streets to a place where he belongs – behind steel bars.”
