Mall spreads goodwill to school children

KwaMakhutha school children were the recipients of the goodwill being spread in the latest round of RakNominations.

The initiative was started by Sapphire Coast Toti Tourism chairman, Jacques van Schalkwyk, who changed a social networking game involving downing an alcoholic beverage while being filmed, into one of kindness. The video of the kindness act is then loaded onto YouTube and the link is posted onto Facebook.

Jacques nominated Galleria and the South Coast Sun. In response, Galleria and Arbour Crossing packed 1,500 lunchboxes for underprivileged school children.

Two schools were chosen, Kusa Kusa and Sesifikile Primary School in KwaMakhutha. Each child received a lunch bag containing a water bottle, juice and lunchtime treats.

“We were so touched to see the joy on their faces after receiving our small gesture,” said Galleria marketing manager, Elizabeth Roux. “It was such a humbling feeling to be able to give back to our community and an experience we will never forget.

Thank you to our tenants Wimpy, Galaxy Bingo, Butik Asia, PNA and Typo, who volunteered and assisted in the packing of the bags. We hope to inspire others to initiate random acts of kindness and make a difference in their own way.” Galleria and Arbour Crossing nominated its sister mall, Boardwalk Inkwazi in Richards Bay.

The South Coast Sun, after sponsoring an adoption kennel at Toti SPCA for three months, nominated ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge and Toti High School.

Cllr Beetge delivered flowers to Mooi Hawens and Huis Lena residents on Valentine’s Day, dressed in a tuxedo and bow tie. He in turn nominated Kuswag and Kingsway high schools.

After much thought, Kingsway High School decided to ‘go big’.

“Two of our life sciences teachers, Lauren Kendrick and Lisa Ferreira will run the Comrades marathon this year,” said school marketer, Elaine Woor. “It will be Lauren’s third attempt and Lisa’s first. The school has decided to sponsor them.”

Pupils and teachers will sponsor them and it is hoped to get sponsorship from corporate companies. All money raised will go to the Starfish charity, which is a charitable organisation that brings life, hope and opportunity to children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/Aids.

Kuswag’s act will be reported in next week’s edition.
