Biology teachers in race for charity

Two biology teachers will tackle this year's Comrades Marathon to raise funds for charity, with a little help from Kingsway High School staff and pupils.

Lauren Kendrick and Lisa Ferreira opted to run the marathon for a good cause and principal, Geoff Harrison decided to get the school behind them as part of its RakNomination. Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge nominated the school to do one random act of kindness as part of a social media initiative doing the rounds in Toti. Staff and pupils will sponsor the pair to raise funds for the Starfish Greathearts Foundation.

“This is the third time doing the Comrades,” said Lauren, who failed in last year’s tough race with just 10km to go “I’m doing my first Comrades, after being nagged by Lauren,’ said Lisa, who was a short distance runner in her youth and coaches indoor and outdoor hockey.

“We chose the Starfish Greathearts Foundation, as we work with children and this organisation helps children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/Aids,” they said.

Their initial goal was to raise R5,000 each for the foundation, but they hope to raise more. To help them achieve their goal, visit the Comrades website www.comrades.com, go to the charities drop-down menu, click on the race4charity link and search for either Lauren or Lisa’s name to donate.
