Climate change workshop to share solutions

Non-profit organisation focuses on educating youth and communities on climate change.

UMBOGINTWINI based non-profit organisation, Future Leaders of Change is passionate about educating the youth and communities on climate change.

The organisation has invited seven local schools to a workshop focusing on climate change at Amanzimtoti library on Wednesday, 26 March at 9.30am.

“Our objectives are to create awareness and to educate the youth in schools and communities around Durban. We have a project called ‘climate change warriors’. At workshops, the ‘warriors’ are armed with information on recycling, tree planting and organic farming, water and electricity conservation, cleaning campaigns and animal and plant protection,” said deputy chairman, Buyani Ndlovu.

At the workshops, training is carried out by environmental experts and climatologists. “We try by all means to simplify the workshops, so people from a rural area are able to understand global warming and its effects on humans.”

On completion of workshops, ‘warriors’ return to their institutions and communities and implement techniques they have learnt, with the assistance of representatives of Future Leaders of Change.

“What makes us different from other organisations with similar objectives is that we let young people develop and implement their own programmes with our help. Global warming affects everyone and it’s happening in front of us. Other countries around the world have experienced the effects of climate change, where many lives have been lost due to cyclones, heat waves, flooding and droughts.”
