Cllr allays low cost housing fears

But 361-unit duplex-style development on the card for Kingsburgh extension area.

There is no low-cost housing planned for the Toti CBD. That’s the word from ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge who was quick to allay the public’s fears after numerous queries were made recently.

The queries followed comments made by eThekwini mayor, James Nxumalo at a RDP handover elsewhere in the city last month.

A cluster housing development is however, planned in the Kingsburgh extension 9 area, accessed via Vaughan Goodwin Road, Longacres Drive, Karridale Drive, Boekenhout Drive and Chestnut Lane. It is proposed to develop 361 duplex-type housing units for the middle-income market.

“While the large, wooded area and coastal forest along Doonheights and Shulton Park is undoubtedly beautiful and a habitat for both fauna and flora, it remains a constant topic of concern, esecially when it comes to crime,” said Cllr Beetge.

The total area to be transformed is about seven hectares with about 300m² of vegetation cleared. The site is demarcated as part of D’Moss on municipal plans, but is privately owned.

Three access points are proposed, from Boekenhout Drive, Vaughan Goodwin Road and Karridene Drive. A traffic impact study has been conducted to ensure there will not be undue traffic loading on the road network.

“The area earmarked for private development with a focus on the middle income market, will not only fill the current gap in this market segment, but will add significantly to the rates base of the area,” said Cllr Beetge.
