Late birth registrations to attract penalty

Register your baby within 30 days of birth.

THE Department of Home Affairs is now enforcing a penalty for late birth registrations.

Home Affairs deputy minister, Fatima Chohan urges parents to register their children’s birth within 30 days.

Parents who register their children after the 30-day period, but within a year, will be liable for a penalty fee. The administration fee for late registration within the first year of birth is R70.

The department has previously put enormous resources into raise awareness about the importance of registering children within 30 days of their birth, with the national population registration campaign which began in 2010. Registering children is important for the National Population Register.

The department is present in over 300 hospitals countrywide to make it easier for parents to register their children.
