Puzzle over bird park sewage source

Water in park is also contaminated.

eThekwini Municipality does not believe there is a sewage problem in the Amanzimtoti Bird Park Santuary.

This despite Toti residents photographing sewage in the pond and river that runs through the park.

“The complaint came to the attention of the reticulation superintendent responsible and after the investigation was done, no blockages were found and no broken pipe was found. The river was also found to be clean,” said eThekwini Municipality’s head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa.

“According to the pump station superintendent, he checked all the pump stations near the Toti Bird Sanctuary, which are the Southgate and KwaRemi pump stations, all are working properly.”

Chairman of Toti Conservancy, Laura Taylor said she went to inspect the bird park several times and besides the sewer stench, also noticed oil contamination in the water.

“There is a thin film of fatty oil, but the main problem is not oil,” she said.

“The smell of sewage is overwhelming and the pond is a thick, soupy black colour. It is sewage and the source needs to be traced as soon as possible. This situation is unacceptable and especially when city officials try to deny what the real problem is.”
