Memorable ‘Christmas in July’ for 21 Club

Very popular speaker, Peter Butterworth, is no stranger to 21 Club.

DAINTY turquoise and white tulle Christmas trees made by Lyn Sutherland graced the 21 Club tables, which sparkled with silver and turquoise stars at the ‘Christmas in July’ luncheon.

Many thanks to Lords and Legends’ Garth who did a great job making the turkey main and nutty apple crumble dessert, which was really ‘Christmassy’.

Very popular speaker, Peter Butterworth, is no stranger to 21 Club. Like Father Christmas, he visits once a year and brings gifts of fun, laughter and wisdom.

He regaled the members with fascinating information about the origin of the name Christmas, the history of 25 December being the day since 336 AD, Yule logs, carols and nativity plays. St Nicholas, Santa Claus and Father Christmas as well as the traditional red suit and reindeer were all explained. Christmas crackers and stockings, holly and mistletoe, Christmas fare, plum pudding, mince pies and Christmas cake have all survived an interesting journey to become what we enjoy today.

Just relating all this information was not enough for Peter, who had a game going throughout his talk. Unsuspecting members found themselves with forfeits like singing a carol or telling a joke, which added to the enjoyment.

Many thanks to Peter for making Christmas in July really special.

The next luncheon will be held on Wednesday, 27 August at Lords and Legends conference room at noon for 12.30pm. Guest speaker is Adele Benvie, who will speak on “harnessing our strengths for success”. The 21 Club will be celebrating women’s month in red, black and gold. Members are reminded that confirmation of intention to attend or not, and names of guests, must be received by Lyn on 082-572-1328 or 031-903-4026 or Golda on 083-633-6338 or 031-916-7001 no later than Friday, 22 August.
