DSW staff to collect orange recycle refuse bags

Due to numerous complaints about non-collection of orange bags, the DSW has decided to pull out the contractor.

After Durban Solid Waste (DSW) reassured worried Toti residents last week that the orange recycle refuse bags are still being collected and distributed, and they were not on certain streets in Toti, the contractor has been dismissed.

A Vasco Da Gama Road resident said that the bags have not been collected in her street for about three weeks. Other complaints were published in the Sun from disgruntled residents.

Zanele Dlamini of DSW education and waste minimisation said the reason for the non-collection was the municipality had hired a new contractor to service the southern areas of eThekwini.

Following complaints, the DSW said it was aware the contractor had missed some roads and promised to rectify the problem.

However, last week the orange bags were still not collected and distributed on Vasco Da Gama Street and DSW said it has now taken more drastic measures.

“I spoke to the contractor and he told me bags were removed from this road,” said Zanele.

“Due to numerous complaints about non-collection of orange bags, the DSW has decided to pull out the contractor, and the collection and distribution of orange bags as from Wednesday, 29 October will be done by DSW staff members, as happened before the contractor was appointed.”

To report non-collection and to request orange bags, householders must call the helpline on 031-303-1665.
