Sewage spews into bird park

Manager of Southgate Business Park, Frans van der Merwe was contacted about the overflow at about 9am.

Two manholes situated in the Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary overflowed with sewage on Wednesday morning, 12 November.

This after months of hard work by Toti Conservancy and Southgate Business Park to find and fine culprits responsible for contaminating the waterways leading into the bird park.

Manager of Southgate Business Park, Frans van der Merwe was contacted about the overflow at about 9am by Lee Lewis of Toti Conservancy, as he has been instrumental in trying to curb the pollution flowing into the bird park. Lee initially tried to contact Jen Adam, another person who has worked tirelessly to stop the pollution.

“A guy from the municipality was doing quality control on the water in the park at the time and I sent him down to have a look,” said Frans. “The water in the park had changed to a grey colour with all the overflow. The sewage overflow was spotted from about 9am and up to 1pm nothing had been done about it, so imagine the amount of sewage that contaminated the water.”

Jen said on her way home at 10.40am she stopped at the bird park. “I was shocked to see an overflow from two manholes within the park,” she said. “I was unsure how long these had been overflowing, but every hour more pollution flowed into the water, destroying all the good that has been done by aerating the water.”

The Sun contacted chairman of Toti Conservancy, Laura Taylor, who, in turn, contacted Dave Wilson of eThekwini wastewater, who went to inspect the sewage overflow.
