Lazarus finds his forever home
Toti SPCA nurtured him back to health, after he was found neglected and starved.
ONE of the most heart-warming and tear-jerking stories at Amanzimtoti SPCA is that of Lazarus, a cross-breed boerboel.
Lazarus, lovingly named by regular and loyal volunteers, Felicity Trit Dent McMilan was found in a yard about a year ago tied to a short chain, neglected and starved of food, water and affection.
“He was severely malnourished, underweight and in desperate need of medical attention. We spoke to the owner and he decided to hand over the dog to the SPCA. Lazarus suffered with bad skin as well as being a very nervous and scared dog especially towards men,” said Toti SPCA PRO, Michelle Hannan.
With a lot of love, nurturing and good food Lazarus slowly picked up weight and became a more confident dog as the days passed by.
“Lazarus improved so radically, it reminded the volunteers of the bible story of Lazarus. This is how he was given his name. Lazarus was vaccinated and when his health was in an acceptable state he was sterilised. With the love of the staff and volunteers, who walk the dogs on a regular basis, he became a firm favourite with everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him and
spending quality time with him. All that remained to be done was to find a special family that he could call his own.”
This happened about a month ago when a young couple came in and adopted another boerboel-cross which they named Gemma. “When an inspector told manager, Tracey Girling of the young couple and the
wonderful home they could offer Lazarus, Tracey knew this would be an ideal home for the SPCA’s big boy. Gemma and Lazarus were introduced and the two hit it off immediately. Both happy and sad tears were shed when
Lazarus left that Saturday, but our hearts were content and most importantly so was Lazarus’s.”
