He is part of the South African biology team.

BIOLOGY boffin, Vashurin Pillay of Kingsway High School is one of four students selected to represent South Africa at the 26th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in Aarhus in Denmark, from 12 to 19 July.

Vashurin wrote a qualifying test for the Olympiad at the school on Friday, 13 March and heard the goods news that he had made the team on Monday, 16 March.

“I am pleased, as I was not expecting it. It was a difficult three-hour paper. I had to study a huge textbook and had to make time do so, in-between studying and writing my standardised tests.”

The textbook he had to study is used at first and second year university level.

“I am looking forward to the overseas trip. At this stage, I am not aware of what is required of us at the Olympiad.” His trip costs R25,000 which includes air tickets, registration, accommodation, meals and excursion. If anyone is able to assist with sponsorship, contact Lingan Pillay on 083-414-9154.

In his spare time, he assists with academic tutoring at school and enjoys either a round of golf or game of tennis.

After matric, Vashurin intends to study actuarial science.
