UGC dream team clinches alliance league honours

The Allerton League team played out at Windsor Park last Sunday - playing against Kloof.

THE good news this week is that Garth Mulroy is back out playing on the European Tour in Asia.

He played in the Shenzhen International last weekend at the Genzon Golf Club, finishing on his own with a par score, in 51st place.

His scores started out very well – 69 in the first round really looked good and he was lying in third place but the 74, 71 and 74 in the last round didn’t help at all. The fact that he’s out there making the cut is all that matters at the moment. Go, Garth and good luck. Next weekend is the Volvo China Open in Shanghai which could be quite interesting to watch, albeit in the early hours of the morning.

The Allerton league team played out at Windsor Park last Sunday, against Kloof. They must have all played very well since they defeated Kloof 7-5. The star of the day was Tom Naicker who had a very good game. Congratulations to the whole team on the win and for flying the Umkomaas flag so high. Long may it continue.

Wednesday was the normal individual stableford. It was nice to see Dave Kemp back on the course after his shoulder op and breaking his wrist. Let’s hope he’s ‘good to go’ from now on. Taking first place was Chris Viljoen, counting out Warren Taylor into second spot, both on 41 points. Hans Beuthe took home the third prize, counting out both Piet Vermaak (fourth place) and Peter Williamson, all on 38 points.

Saturday was the fourth round of the alliance league where the competition is really hotting up. Club captain, Peter Toward welcomed new visitors Mario Zampoli and Chris Coxell along with regular visitors, Claude Osborne and Clyde Leisegang. The competition was won by the ‘dream team’ of Sabiha Bacaus, Derek Airey, Dave Mulroy, together with their ‘ghost partner’ on 94 spectacular points, followed by Dave Kemp, Vesa and Susi Suhonen (with their ‘ghost partner’) on 93 points. The Blue Brothers comprising of Leven Chetty, Saga Reddy, Nelson Moonsamy and Anil Sewpershad took home the third prize on 91 points. The ‘ghost’ was Viv Naicker. The jackpot was shared this week between Peter and Linda Toward and Dave Mulroy, all on 11 points but the hidden birdie (hole 14) will be carried over to next week. There were four 2-clubs, of which only three were paid out. The moral of this tale is definitely check and pay your own. Linda knows that husbands cannot be relied upon to do it for you.

The attendance draw went begging since Barrie Taylor had already left the club. The football sweep, which has become a firm favourite with everyone, was won by none other than the club’s barman, Eddie, with Halifax FC.

By all accounts, the ‘progressive / roving dinner’, which was something totally different last Saturday, was a major success, thanks to all the would-be chefs who did all the cooking at the various homes. The party ended well after midnight which is a signal that a great time was had by all. Watch out for the next date – tickets are limited so don’t miss out.

In May, the club is holding its club champs. The list is up on the notice board in the foyer, Any up-country members wishing to play in the champs can call the club. Dates are 16 and 17 May. Also in May and following the weekend of the champs is the Sanlam Cancer Challenge on 23 May.
