School protests against xenophobia

Pupils wore black and donated articles to the camp in Isipingo.

Toti pupils stood up against xenophobia on Thursday, 30 April when Kingsway High School organised a protest outside the school.

Attacks on foreign nationals in eThekwini and elsewhere in South Africa last month sparked outrage from South African citizens.

A refugee camp, which housed over 1,000 foreigners at its peak, was set up in Isipingo and the Toti community and churches showed their support with donations of clothing and food to the camp.

“Today the Kingsway family stood against xenophobia,” said the school’s marketer, Elaine Woor. “The pupils took to the street outside the school and held their banners up high. Passing motorists hooted loudly and even Toti SAPS switched on their sirens to show their approval.

During break, a special assembly was held and our girls choirs sang and a couple of poems were read.

Pupils wore black and donated articles to the camp in Isipingo, which Sweetwaters Church kindly took for us.”
