Toti’s fight against crime received a major boost with the installation of three CCTV cameras in the Doonside area.
The cameras, situated at the foot bridge, the Worlds View Close intersection and Adelaide Road, are linked by Skytec Wireless to ET Security’s control room in Toti and are monitored 24-hours, backed by armed response.
“We got tired of all the nonsense going on and getting hit by crime, so we decided to do something pro-active about it,” said Doonside resident, Jenny Joubert. “We got everyone on board. We decided to start slowly and build on it.”
Plans are underway to raise funds to install three more cameras at Valley Road, Mopani Road and in the vicinity of Operation Bobbi Bear.
Focus will then shift to the many footpaths which criminals use as escape routes.
The suburb’s 70-odd houses are also in contact via a Whatsapp crime group. “If we see anything suspicious, we report it on the group, which is linked to ET and the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO).
“These latest cameras, which went live last week, bring the total in Toti which we monitor to about 20,” said ET Rapid Response South Coast managing member, Tony Lokker.
“We encourage each suburb to follow suit and start to manage their own area.
ET will also step up patrols and make our response time quicker.”
Jenny said she has never seen the Toti community pull together and communicate as she has seen recently in the fight against crime. “We encourage other suburbs to do the same.”
