Doonheights children make generous clothing donation to welfare
The Kingsburgh Welfare also elaborated on National Child Protection Week, which took place at the beginning of June.
ANSWERING Kingsburgh Welfare’s plea for clothing donations, little ones of Doonheights Pre-primary School dug deep into their closets and amassed a whopping donation which was handed over to the local welfare.
“We say thank you to Doonheights Pre-primary School for encouraging the little ones to bring items of clothing to donate to us,” said Kingsburgh Welfare senior social worker, Sandra Govender.
“We thank Danielle and her educators, learners and parents for helping us make a difference in the lives of the people we serve. Your little ones are amazing. Teaching them to love your charity and values of kindness is commendable. We would like to challenge other schools and creches to get on board with this initiative.”
National Child Protection Week took place at the beginning of June. Sandra elaborated on the welfare’s child protection programme, which this year, focuses on allowing children to be children, as there is much pressure on children today.
“We have liaised with other stakeholders in highlighting the importance of nurturing and caring for children that will meet their physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs,” she said.
The theme for Child Protection week, which took place from 29 May until 5 June, was ‘Let us protect all children to move South Africa forward’.
“We encourage a change of our mindsets as parents, caregivers and the community at large to allow children to be children,” said Sandra. “Sometimes we are so focused on the future that we deny children a present. Children should be encouraged to develop an imagination and there is no better way than through games and play.”
Kingburgh Welfare’s child protection outreach on Friday, 31 May was held at Illovo where together with Indwe Learning Centre, children were encouraged to play and take part in fun games.
“We thank the Fire Department for their involvement and for their wonderful interaction with the children. We also thank Alan from Victory Kwik Spar for its kind donation of hotdogs which were handed out for lunch,” said Sandra.
The Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare Society is situated at 2 Hall Road, Warner Beach and is open Monday to Friday 8am to noon. For more information call 031-916-2274 or 031-916-3007.
