Determined to get the temporary Rockview Road opened on time, ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge and Leomat foreman, Brendan Roux visited the site on Friday to assess the progress.
When councillor Beetge and Roux arrived on site on Friday morning, 14 June, there was no sign of the marking contractor.
According to Beetge, road markings, stop signs and barriers had to be erected on the Friday for the crucial link road to be opened to traffic by the Saturday.
“This only after I urged the city manager to sign the letter of award, which would allow for the road to be legally opened in an effort to alleviate traffic congestion along the detour roads and the negative impact on Rockview businesses. We were left with two options – slander the municipality, the current most common thing to do, or seek a quick solution,” said Beetge.
After one phone call, Beetge convinced Vincent Naidoo, who has 35 years of municipal road marking experience, to assist. “We fetched him from his house, got some paint and supplies, and by 5.20pm on Friday afternoon, the beautiful road, installed by Leomat, boasted all the required right markings and we could open the road. Our town is once again united. Please drive slow and cautiously,” added Beetge.
