Wrangle over road goes on
THE road reserve wrangle continues in Toti.
Despite the provision for the extension of Greenside Road having been withdrawn from the Town Planning Scheme, Gerrie Pienaar says that the battle to have the provision for the road reserve for the extension of Mount Road removed will continue. Gerrie, who owns the 18 500 square metre property, lot 98, which has access from both Lewis Drive and Adams Road, wants to develop his land. However, his plans have been thwarted because of the ‘special road declaration’.
According to Toti resident, Russell Gray, the provision for special roads should have been deleted from the town planning scheme some years ago.
Several of Gerrie’s neighbours on Toti’s ridge have paid their dues for the road reserve, which runs through their properties.
Promenade is too dark
TOTI promenade is inadequately lit at night and is unattractive to tourists visiting the area.
That’s the opinion of Fred Lewis, manager of Albatros Flats, who said holidaymakers complain about the lack of light along stretches of the promenade. “People can walk along the Durban beachfront for kilometres, but in Toti only the area around Inyoni Rocks is well lit,” he said. Mr Lewis also said there is also insufficient lighting at the braai area on Beach Road.
Children fall from pylon
TWO children fell to their death from an electricity pylon in Umbogintwini on Wednesday last week.
Three children were playing on the pylon near Umbogintwini bridge at about 5pm when the accident happened. The two who died were Erasmus Ngongo, 11, and Derrick Hlengwa, 9. Goodman Baba, 10, was hurt in the accident. The boys apparently held onto a loose electrical cable, which was moving up the pylon. When they reached the top of the pylon they let go, and fell to the ground.
Now it’s Alderman Streek
AMANZIMTOTI councillor, Bill Streek, was made an alderman at a ceremony held on Wednesday, 19 October.
Clr Streek has also been nominated to serve on the Southern Council of the Greater Durban Metropolitan Council. He was first elected to council in September 1984, and has since served on the town planning and works, health, finance and general purposes committees.
