Amanzimtoti golfer clinches second Kids Golf win

He also holed an award for an eagle on the par 5 13th hole.

Dian Wilmot is well on his way to winning his age group overall at the Kids Golf annual tournament with two wins under his glove already after two rounds.

His first win in the 13 to 14-years category came at Umhlali Country Club last month. He also holed an award for an eagle on the par 5 13th hole. “This was my second eagle on that course. Last year I scored one on the par 4 17th hole.”
Although he turned 15 last month, he has been allowed to continue playing in the 13 to 14 category this year due to the pandemic.

His second round win was on Sunday, 13 September at Durban Royal Country Club. “A round is 18 holes played in a day. With social distancing, we are only allowed to play in a three-ball (three players) and we have to keep our distance from each other.”

The tournament is contested once a month at various courses around KZN. Next up is Kloof in October. It usually commences in January, but due to Covid-19, the first round was postponed to August for a shorter format. “The African Open, which features all the players from the provincial Kids Golf, usually takes place in August, but this year it was cancelled.”

Dian is a Grade 9 learner at Kuswag Skool. The grades have been split into two, alphabetically according to the learners’ surnames and each group attends school two days once week and three days the next. “I’ve managed to keep up with my schoolwork. Our exams were cancelled, but we are writing tests from next week. The good news is I now get to play golf every second day.”

He is now focussed on the Natal Schools competition that tees off at Durban Royal Country Club on Sunday, 20 September. “I should do well, as I finished 10th out of more than 50 players in the first one I played, which was last year. It features players of all ages, but we are divided according to our handicap, so I am in A group. Durban Royal is a good course and I always play fairly well there.”
