[LETTER] Disconnection of electricity questioned

An Amanzimtoti resident is concerned about the councils reasoning behind arrear metro bills.

EDITOR – I am a resident of Dan Pienaar Drive, Amanzimtoti. On Wednesday, February 16, I accosted an independent contractor intent on disconnecting my electricity on the basis of a disconnection slip dated February, 16, issued by eThekwini Municipality stating that I was in arrears.

Considering that the amount shown as being in arrears as at January 24, was less than one months estimated usage, and further if one takes into account the deposit that the council holds for my property, the arrears probably equates to one weeks consumption.

After discussing with the contractor, I paid a lump sum to the council. It is noted that the last consolidated bill that I received was dated November 25, 2021. I cannot help thinking that the council is targeting those who are most likely to pay up-front, regardless, in order to improve its cash flow.

I personally doubt very much that the residents of Umgababa, KwaMakhuta, Umlazi, Clairwood, KwaMashu and the employees of eThekwini are so up-to-date with the municipality to warrant the cutting of my supply.
