Beaches close due to contamination

Ward 97 councillor, André Beetge, said Winklespruit, Karridene, and Umgababa beaches have been closed with immediate effect.

THREE beaches to the south of Amanzimtoti were closed today (January 13) to bathing and other water activities due to E.coli contamination.

A high E.coli bacteria reading during testing indicated contamination as a result of sewage flowing into rivers or directly into the ocean.
Councillor André Beetge said Winklespruit, Karridene, and Umgababa beaches have been closed with immediate effect.

The following beaches, however, remain open for bathing: Pipeline, Amanzimtoti Main, and Doonside.
