The NPO is based at the Amanzimtoti SPCA and is run by volunteers. It runs an eight-week programme where children are taught essential canine care practices including how to feed, groom and keep dogs healthy. The sessions are held on Saturdays and are often accompanied by practical activities like bathing dogs and learning about parasite control. In addition, Umbogintwini Dog Training Club holds dog training and agility classes for the organisation.

“Edu-Paw exists to promote animal welfare by educating local communities, focusing mainly on teaching children from under-resourced areas about responsible dog ownership. Our aim is to break the cycle of neglect and cruelty through empathy and practical skills. We extend our efforts beyond education by providing vaccinations, sterilisations and basic medical care for dogs in the township communities whose owners have registered and faithfully attend the canine care classes,” says founder Cathy Keegan.

In addition, Cathy explains that SPCA inspectors educate both children and adults about issues like illegal hunting with dogs, dog fighting and the dangers of fireworks to animals. These awareness sessions aim to foster a generation of responsible pet owners and animal advocates.

“We rely heavily on community support and donations. We welcome contributions in the form of dog food, collars, leashes, blankets and cash donations to assist with sterilisation, medical treatments and educational materials. Our volunteers travel at their own expense to assist with running the programme,” said Keegan.
