Held in Merebank, a total of 10 schools were represented, with each sending 15 learners and a teacher to the event. The workshop focused on exposing learners to the environmental impact of big industries in the south of Durban. SDCEA said in a statement that these industries contribute significantly to air pollution, which affects the health and well-being of surrounding communities.
“In addition to this, learners were given a comprehensive presentation on the air quality and health, Just Transition, renewable energy alternatives, and broader climate change issues. The session aimed to empower youth with knowledge about sustainable solutions and encourage critical thinking about South Africa’s energy future,” it said.
Each school was also allowed to participate creatively by preparing and presenting a poem, song, or presentation on climate change and global warming. SDCEA said this not only highlighted the learners’ understanding of the issues but also fostered a sense of environmental responsibility and activism.
“The workshop was an inspiring display of youth engagement and a powerful step toward building informed future leaders in environmental justice,” it said.
