Founder, Joann Herbst, put into perspective the amount of food Elders Voice goes through each year.

  • 1 825 pockets of potatoes
  • 14 600 loaves of bread
  • 4 565kg of sugar
  • 312 tins of coffee
  • 18 250kg of rice
  • 18 250kg of meat
  • 9 125kg of maize meal
  • 26 280 litres of milk

“Why are we attempting a world record? We know it has been done before, and we have an amazing community, and that we can help so many charities, including comfortably being able to feed our elderly residents. We have only R15 a day per resident to do so. It is not easy and you can see by our numbers. We can only afford necessities, and I know we are not alone as many organisations face the same challenges,” said Herbst.

She assured that every donation will be weighed, tagged, documented and numbered.

“Every little bit is going to make a difference. I know it is a crazy feat to attempt, but I know we can do it through will, determination, and the support of our community. Let the challenge begin,” she added.

The cut-off date is July 18, Mandela Day, and Herbst fittingly used a quote of the late president, “It always seems impossible until it is done.”

All donations can be collected at or delivered to 21 Riverside Road, Doonside. Should you wish to donate if you are far away, you can do so through Pick n Pay ASAP, Checkers Sixty60 or by sending a truck with non-perishable foods.
