The mother worked at a magistrate’s court. According to the daughter’s confession statement, which was read in the Chatsworth Regional Court during her sentencing appearance recently, she conspired with two men to kill her mother to inherit her pension fund and her life insurance policies.
The girl, who was a matric learner at the time, told the court that after breaking up with her 19-year-old boyfriend, who was also in matric, she entered into a romantic relationship with a 36-year-old man.
She claimed it was the 36-year-old who convinced her that if her mother died, she would inherit a lot of money. Her 19-year-old ex-boyfriend was brought into the plan, and he agreed to take part in the killing.
During the night on November 21, 2024, the girl said she opened the gate to let the killers in, who proceeded to stab her mother with knives numerous times until she died. She admitted that she also participated in the stabbing.
After the murder, the girl had told the police that she woke up to a knife-wielding intruder in her living room on the night of the murder, and discovered her mother’s lifeless body in the kitchen, covered in stab wounds. The teenagers were arrested a few days later while she was helping to organise her mother’s funeral. The third suspect, the 36-year-old man, was also arrested but was later released for a lack of evidence linking him to the crime.
In a deal struck with the prosecuting team, the two teens made a full confession in exchange for a lighter prison sentence of 20 years each, instead of life imprisonment.
As she was led out of the court to start her sentence, the young woman cried out to her grandmother.
“I’m sorry, gogo, and I regret what I did,” she said.
Charges against the third accused are set to be reinstated once more evidence is collected.
