Amanzimtoti rugby coach puts the focus on team-building

This experienced coach says the goal for the upcoming season is to build from where the second team left off.

AMANZIMTOTI Rugby Club’s (ARC) second-team coach, Jason Hines (39), recently received the Most Valuable Member and President’s Award at the club’s year-end function.

Hines, who played rugby for 25 years and has been coaching at ARC for five, said the 2023 season was a successful one, with the team building as the season progressed. “We ended second in the league and went on to the Junior Murray Cup semi-finals,” he said.

Hines’ goal for the upcoming season is to build from where the team left off while becoming more competitive in every aspect of the game. “Going into next year, we will need to build on consistency at practice and on game day so we can get into the right approach as a team from the start of the season,” he said.

Hines has played first-team for most of his life. “From 2000 to 2002, I played major league rugby in the United States of America for the Cincinnati Rugby Football Club, nicknamed the Wolfhounds. I decided to start coaching when the club encouraged me to give it a go,” he said.

Hines, who is in the process of obtaining his World Rugby Level 2, has coached U14As and U15As as the first-team assistant coach at Forest Hills in Port Elizabeth alongside Brent Janse van Rensburg in 2003/2004. His coaching journey at ARC began in 2019.

He said the next step in his rugby journey is to keep growing as a coach, in all parts of the game. “I can only focus on me and what I do and put out there. The other opportunities will develop based on my hard work and results,” said Hines.

When he is not busy working, coaching, doing courses or playing golf, he enjoys spending quality time with his family.
