In September, a total of 14 suspects were arrested for various contact and property-related crimes, and 19 convictions were secured.

DURING September, Amanzimtoti Police Station’s detectives conducted several raids, ensuring that perpetrators were arrested and put behind bars.

The station’s communications officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, said a total of 14 suspects were arrested for various contact and property-related crimes, such as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), house robbery, common robbery, theft and fraud.

“Arrested suspects are still attending court, and the detectives are confident they will be brought to book. Nineteen convictions were secured. The accused were sentenced to four months up to three years imprisonment, fined R5 000 to R12 000 or imprisonment up to one year, and the admission of guilt paid was from R1 000 to R8 000,” she said.

Van der Spuy also appeals to community members to assist the detectives with information that can lead to the successful apprehension and conviction of suspects.

“The community is urged to play an active role in reporting criminal activities and any suspicious behaviour. Members of the community who may have information that can assist in solving crimes are requested to contact their local police station, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or utilise the MySAPS mobile application to give tip-offs. Any information received will be regarded as privileged and confidential,” she said.

The police work hand in hand with structures and security companies, looking at a proactive approach to combating crime.

“A strong relationship between the police and the community continues to isolate criminals and create a safe and secure environment in and around the area,” said Van der Spuy.
