Visibility operations aim to deter criminal activity in Athlone Park

Residents are encouraged to join the official Community Policing Forum sub-forms or neighbourhood watch structures in their area.

WITH an increase of copper and petty theft over the last few months, the Athlone Park Community Police Sub-Forum and partners recently held a visibility operation in the area.

The sub-forum’s chairperson, Rishane Rajkoomar, said the theft incidents happen in a number of different roads, at different times, with no clear pattern on where to focus their patrol efforts.

“It is difficult for a small patrol team to cover such a large area. By doing operations like this, where we join with security companies and law enforcement and bring in resources from the surrounding areas, we have a much better chance of catching the perpetrators and deterring crime,” he said.

Rajkoomar added that this crime fighting exercise was a great show of force that sent a very clear message to any criminals that might have been scouting the area looking for a target.

On behalf of the Athlone Park Community Police Sub-Forum and the residents of Athlone Park he thanked everyone that assisted with the visibility operation.

“We always appreciate it when companies like Blue Security – Durban enthusiastically initiate and support operations like this in our area. We also want to thank the Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum (CPF) and all our neighbouring CPF sub-forums and neighbourhood watches for assisting. We really appreciate the willingness of so many volunteers to come out in the early hours of the morning, sacrifice their sleep and put in the hard work to assist the residents of Athlone Park,” said Rajkoomar

Residents are encouraged to join the official CPF sub-forums or neighbourhood watch structures in their area, which also gives residents access to the official communication channels where incidents may be reported.

“We also need more people to join our volunteer patrol teams, and for residents to be vigilant and post immediately on the official groups in their area. Another way to help is to contribute towards surveillance camera projects,” said Rajkoomar.
