Not just art, it’s Totally Art
Totally Art invites people from as young as 14 years to take up the hobby and express their creativity through various forms of art.
TOTALLY Art, formerly know as the Upper South Coast Art Association, officially celebrated its new name and recognised its artists at its year-end function, held at Mooi Hawens on November 23.
According to Patricia McCann, the newly elected president, the original art club was formed about 45 years ago and there was a great need to update the way they worked and to make the club more visible.

“The previous name was onerous and no one knew who or where we came from due to the break in normal meetings during Covid-19 in 2020. We feel it is essential to recreate ourselves and to be more dynamic and exciting,” Patricia said.
She explained that art was a wonderful way to relax and to get those creative juices flowing. “We all need downtime in this chaotic world we live in and it is wonderfully beneficial and therapeutic. Taking just 10 minutes a day to doodle or to colour in shuts off your mind to daily stresses and allows you to contemplate the beauty of nature, colours, textures and art mediums. It leaves you feeling so enriched.”
Patricia encouraged both beginners and experienced artists to start. “We all have to start somewhere and there is so much encouragement from fellow artists. All you need is a drawing book or a notebook and pencil. We have a few art items to get you started. We would prefer that new artists do not rush out and buy everything they think they need.”
“Art is a slow journey and its not about spending huge amounts of money. It is about being creative and exploratory and you will be advised on which products are required as they are required. We encourage everyone over the age of 14 to join us,” she said.
She added that everybody had the ability to draw and by attending one of the club’s meeting, they would be able to determine what the person’s ability was. “Everyone brings something different regarding their ability. Some just have not had the opportunity and are held back by their fears. There is no need, as every one of us started out by being anxious about making their first brushstroke or mark on a paper and look at us now. It will boost your confidence.”

Pat said the club currently had 25 active members, but it was growing every month. “We aim to grow and get back to where we left off pre-Covid-19 with exciting exhibitions and our dream is to manage a gallery again. We are looking for secure premises. There are so many excellent artists in Toti who could all enjoy the exhibition space.”
