Local photographers nab awards for their art
Club members were awarded for their excellent photographs during March, with youngster Reuben Loots taking top honours.

SHUTTERBUGS along the scenic Sapphire Coast were honoured by the recently formed Sapphire Coast Camera Club, which now boasts around 31 eager members of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels.
The club, still in its infancy having been established in September last year, holds monthly photograph competitions with a set subject and stringent requirement that the picture is taken during that month. While there is an overall winner for the month, there is also a category for both juniors and seniors.

For March, the category was “vintage” and twelve year old, Reuben Loots, took top honours with his photograph, while his peer, Tim McClurg, won out in the best junior category and Peter McIntyre’s photograph won him best senior.
Chairman of the club, Wynand Grobler, explained that to ensure a level playing field with unbiased judging, the photographs are sent to judges with a star rating from one to five, with one representing complete novices and five representing experts, and the photographs are judged accordingly and feedback is provided to each entrant so that they are able to improve upon their craft.
“It’s a great club with nice people and good photographers. We’re like a family. We do outings and we don’t just go and take photos, we learn from each other, from the settings to why your photo looks like that and mine looks like this. If someone doesn’t understand, we’ll have someone explain how to do it during the next lecture. There is also a category for outings each month. We meet on the second and fourth Saturday of every month at the Cutty Sark Hotel. On March 8, we had a person who spoke about birds in flight,” said Wynand.
The tenured photographer proudly said that the club covered events during December for Sapphire Coast Tourism and were approached by the National Sea Rescue Institute to photograph its Rocky Bay station in May. The camera club will participate in its first inter-club competition in July, competing against over a dozen other KZN clubs.
