Ramaphosa’s development model gets local support

eThekwini Municipality has officially endorsed the District Development Model One Plan, a national framework aimed at aligning government efforts to improve service delivery and development.

AT AN eThekwini Municipality executive committee (Exco) meeting on March 25, the city officially endorsed the District Development Model (DDM) One Plan, first unveiled by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his presidential imbizo in Umgababa last November.

The DDM One Plan serves as a framework for all levels of government to align budgets, programmes, and service delivery within the municipality.

Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the model aims to streamline planning and implementation, while ensuring that development is people-centred and spatially targeted.

“This endorsement aligns with eThekwini’s vision of becoming a Smart Coastal City Port Region — a globally connected, resilient, and liveable city that leverages its coastal location, port infrastructure, and technological innovation to drive inclusive growth. The DDM approach fosters co-ordinated service delivery, investment attraction, economic development, and social transformation by breaking down institutional silos and placing communities at the centre of development,” said Sisilana.

As part of the rollout, eThekwini will collaborate with social partners, private sector stakeholders, and all levels of government to ensure successful implementation.

Speaking in Umgababa last year, Ramaphosa said the DDM One Plan would help the government oversee budgets and projects in an accountable and transparent manner while ensuring balanced development between urban and rural areas.
